Convoy march table

Packet size, spacing and speed in. Column length, pass time and clearance times out.

Set the inputs, then work it out.

Column length--km, head to tail
Road space--m per vehicle
Pass time--min at a point
Time gap--sec between vehicles
Clear the defile--min, whole column
Head arrives--after start
Tail arrives--after start
Vehicles per packet--average

Does closing the gaps always help?

On the clock, yes, and on everything else, no. Tighter spacing shortens the column and the pass time, and it concentrates the column into a smaller area. That trade is a command decision, not an arithmetic one.

What does road space mean?

Vehicle length plus the gap behind it: the stretch of road that vehicle owns while moving. Multiply by the number of vehicles and you have most of the column length.
